A comprehensive meeting was held by Osama Hammad, the Prime Minister appointed by the House of Representatives, along with senior military leaders of the Libyan National Army (LNA), to discuss the implementation of the Military Retirement Law, as directed by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials including Major General Khairi Al-Tamimi, Secretary-General of the General Command of the Armed Forces; Major General Atiya Al-Sharif, Director of Military Accounts Administration; Major General Saddam Haftar, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces; Murai Al-Barassi, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL); Idris Hafez, Head of the Social Security Fund; and Salem Al-Zoubi, Director of the Military Retirement Administration at the Social Security Fund.

According to a government statement, the meeting focused on Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s directives to activate the Military Retirement Law, which covers all members of the armed forces in the eastern, western, and southern regions.

Earlier this week, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed deep concern over the arbitrary arrest and detention of popular journalist and government critic Ahmed Senussi on 11 July in Tripoli.

UNSMIL stated that stifling journalists’ reporting fosters a climate of fear and undermines Libya’s democratic transition.

A thriving civic space, where Libyans can engage in open and safe debate, exercising their right to freedom of expression, is essential.

UNSMIL urged all Libyan authorities to protect journalists and media workers.
