Floods ravaged the Mansoura area in the coastal municipality of Edri in Sabha, southern Libya, following heavy rains in the region. Calls for help were made by residents reporting families stranded due to the flooding. In a swift response, Battalion 177 of the Libyan Armed Forces was deployed to assist in evacuating the affected families and providing necessary support. This flooding coincides with the first anniversary of “Storm Daniel,” described as the strongest Mediterranean storm, which previously caused massive destruction and resulted in the death and disappearance of thousands.
Recent floods in southeastern Libya, including the towns of Alkufra and Rabiana, have displaced nearly 3,000 people due to unprecedented rainfall recorded as the highest since 1946. The flooding caused extensive disruptions, including power outages, as reported in August 2024.
The catastrophic impact of Storm Daniel in 2023 was deeply felt, especially in Derna where two dams burst due to extreme rainfall. The aftermath was devastating, with a significant loss of life and extensive damage, thrusting the city and its inhabitants into a prolonged recovery phase. The political complexities further complicated the reconstruction efforts in Derna, highlighting the challenges in managing such disasters amidst ongoing regional instability.
