The President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Menfi, affirmed that reaching elections requires a broader dialogue that includes all institutions arising from the political agreement.
He stressed the importance of continuing to implement the principles of the Libyan political dialogue roadmap.
Menfi made these remarks in a series of posts on his account on the “X” platform, welcoming the United Nations Security Council Resolution No. (2702), issued on October 30 last year, regarding the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
He commended the resolution’s emphasis that the “text of the Libyan political dialogue roadmap is the governing reference for the phase, complementing and explaining the 2015 political agreement.”
Menfi also stated, “The international and local welcome to the formation of the High Financial Committee to enhance transparency and joint management of revenues and progress in the file of national reconciliation motivates us to continue implementing the remaining principles of the roadmap document,” which was adopted during the meetings of the Libyan political dialogue in Tunis in mid-November 2020.
The United Nations Security Council, on October 30, unanimously adopted Resolution No. (2702), extending the mandate of the UN Mission in Libya for one year until October 31, 2024.
The resolution also calls on Libyan political institutions and key stakeholders to engage with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Abdullah Battelli, in negotiations to hold free, fair, transparent, and comprehensive elections throughout the country as soon as possible.
In a related context, the media advisor to the Speaker of the House of Representatives stated that holding a meeting between the Speaker of the House, Aqila Saleh, and the President of the High Council of State, Mohamed Tukaila, in the coming period is a natural step to complete the arrangements for choosing a unified government whose members are selected.
This is seen as a step forward towards holding presidential and legislative elections, according to local media reports.
He said, “The Council adopted the outcomes of the ‘6+6’ committee formed by the House of Representatives and the State Council, and did not interfere in it.” He also emphasized that “the next task is to begin the formation of a unified government to lead the country towards elections.”
