The Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, engaged in a crucial dialogue with the Russian Ambassador to Libya, Haidar Aganin.

This important meeting was primarily focused on the current political and security landscape in the nation.

The meeting’s details were shared by Bathily on the platform ‘X’, highlighting the gravity and importance of the discussions held. Both Bathily and Aganin acknowledged the urgent need for effective engagement of key Libyan parties in reaching a political settlement.

This settlement is viewed as a critical step towards facilitating the conduct of national elections, a milestone long-awaited in the Libyan political landscape.

In a similar vein, Bathily previously held discussions with Nicola Orlando, the European Union (EU) Ambassador, addressing the concerning situation prevalent in Libya.

These talks, also shared on ‘X’, reinforce the international community’s focus on Libya’s stability and the path forward.

Adding to his diplomatic endeavors, Bathily, in November last year, initiated a proposal for a summit involving the five principal parties in the Libyan crisis.

This summit aims to resolve outstanding issues concerning the elections, thereby paving the way for a more stable political environment in Libya.

However, in his recent briefing to the United Nations Security Council, Bathily expressed criticism towards some Libyan leaders. He pointed out their stagnancy and lack of firm commitment to ending the political deadlock in the country.

While these leaders did not directly refuse the invitation to the five-party meeting, Bathily noted that some set conditions for their participation, adding complexity to the peace process.

This ongoing dialogue and the efforts of international diplomats like Abdoulaye Bathily and Haidar Aganin are pivotal in steering Libya toward a peaceful and stable political future, underscored by the long-anticipated national elections.

The international community continues to watch these developments closely, hopeful for a resolution that brings lasting peace and stability to Libya.
