In a significant diplomatic engagement, Mohammed Menfi, head of Libya’s Presidential Council, met with French Special Envoy Paul Solier to discuss Libya’s ongoing political and economic progress.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Council’s headquarters in Tripoli on Monday, was also attended by the French Ambassador to Libya, Mustafa Mehrach.

During the talks, Menfi and Solier reviewed strides made in bolstering institutions crucial for advancing Libya’s political process towards upcoming elections.

The French envoy conveyed President Emmanuel Macron’s greetings, praising Menfi’s “courageous and positive” steps in the political arena.

Menfi highlighted the importance of improving the African country’s economic situation, which he noted needs further steps in cooperation with the United Nations mission to facilitate dialogue.

This collaboration is expected to reflect positively on Libya’s political stability and security, ultimately paving the way for direct popular engagement in governance.

The discussions underscored the collaborative effort between Libya and France to ensure a peaceful transition to democratic governance through free and fair elections.

Stephanie Khoury, the acting head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), has engaged in consultations with ambassadors and defense attachés involved in the Security Working Group emerging from the Berlin Process’s International Follow-up Committee.

According to a UNSMIL statement, these discussions are a preparatory step for the upcoming Security Working Group meeting, scheduled for October 17 in Sirte.

Participants at the meeting emphasized the urgent need to support the efforts of the Joint Military Committee (5+5) in effectively implementing its mandate, particularly in reinforcing the ceasefire agreement.

The European Union (EU) recently welcomed the agreement that addresses the dispute over the leadership of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL).

The Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State established a mechanism, criteria, and timeline for appointing a new CBL Governor, Deputy Governor, and Board of Directors.
