Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has vocalized a strong plea today, urging the removal of US and European-imposed sanctions on Syria. In a powerful address to the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lavrov warmly welcomed Syria’s return to the League of Arab States and affirmed Russia’s steadfast support for initiatives striving for a peaceful resolution to the Sudan crisis.
Lavrov went on to suggest that the evolving situation in Sudan mirrors the West’s attempts at “exporting their democratic ideals.” The Minister was candid in emphasizing that achieving stability in the Middle East necessitates a viable solution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Pointedly, he accused the US of doing “everything in their power to prevent peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.”
Further criticisms were directed at Western countries, as Lavrov accused them of reneging on their promises not to expand the NATO alliance and continuously arming the Ukrainian regime.
Touching upon the BRICS organization – a coalition of South Africa, Russia, India, China, and Brazil – Lavrov praised its increasing capability and its resolute stand for the right to shape a new multipolar structure. In a significant statement, the Russian Foreign Minister accused the US and the West of perpetually “fanning the flames of wars, dividing humanity, and obstructing the emergence of a multipolar world.”
Concluding his potent address, Lavrov advocated for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, emphasizing the expansion and increased representation of the Security Council. This, he believes, is fundamental to wresting it from “Western dominance.” He further highlighted the pressing need to redistribute voting rights in the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
