Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, has criticized Israel for its disproportionate response to a Hamas attack, highlighting the dire situation as Tel Aviv uses starvation as a weapon in Gaza.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper “El País,” Borrell described the current circumstances as a disaster, noting the suspension of humanitarian aid by the United Nations (UN) due to Israel’s actions, which he stated contravene international law. He pointed out the destruction in Gaza and labeled the use of force as disproportionate.

Borrell remarked that Hamas represents an ideology that cannot be combated with anything but another idea, criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans for Gaza as unacceptable and a seed for future hatred.

He also mentioned the well-known fact that Israelis funded Hamas and contributed to the division among Palestinians, and hinted at the influence of the American stance on President Joe Biden’s popularity among young Democratic voters.

As the conflict in Gaza enters its 142nd day, breakthroughs in Paris talks hint at a possible new deal between Hamas and Israel amidst ongoing bombings that threaten a humanitarian catastrophe.

Denis Francis, the President of the UN General Assembly, has described the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as an “indispensable lifeline for millions of Palestinians” over the past 75 years, emphasizing the crucial need for Palestinian people and children for its services.

According to the United Nations Information Centre, the Assembly President expressed concern over the ongoing deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and the severe challenges facing UNRWA.

He urged member states to provide sustainable and predictable financial and political support to UNRWA as it addresses “the largest humanitarian crisis since its establishment.”
