Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has emphasized Italy’s leading role in political initiatives aimed at ending the fighting between Israel and Hamas.

In a statement reported by the Italian news agency Aki, Tajani said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is taking a hardline approach, stressing that it is in everyone’s interest to work towards de-escalation.

The violence between Israel and Hamas has been ongoing for several weeks. The international community has called for both sides to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table. Italy has been a vocal advocate for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
