The International Organization for Migration (IOM) urgently called on global nations to increase their donations to address the world’s largest displacement crisis in Sudan. On Tuesday, the IOM warned that failure to act could result in tens of thousands of preventable deaths.
Mohamed Refaat, who leads the IOM mission in Sudan, highlighted in a press briefing that the organization has received only 21% of the funding required to provide essential aid to Sudanese already suffering under the strains of conflict, and now facing additional threats from hunger, disease, and flooding.
“The international community is not doing enough,” stated Refaat. He emphasized the urgent need for a “massive and coordinated global response,” without which, the risk of witnessing tens of thousands of preventable deaths in the coming months is highly likely.
According to the IOM, nearly one in every five people in Sudan has been displaced internally, amounting to approximately 10.7 million people. An additional 2.3 million have fled across the country’s borders.
The conflict that erupted in April 2023 has unleashed waves of ethnic violence and created famine-like conditions across Sudan.
