Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed that India would host COP33 in 2028, as he addressed the COP28 climate conference in Expo City, Dubai.
Despite India’s substantial 17% share of the global population, its contribution to global carbon emissions remains relatively low at less than 4%, according to Modi.
During his speech on the second day of the summit, Modi discussed India’s launch of the green credit initiative, which was initially announced in October.
This initiative introduces a market-based mechanism aimed at encouraging voluntary environmental actions across various sectors.
These green credits are tradable commodities that can be bought and sold on a domestic market platform.
Furthermore, Modi affirmed India’s commitment to achieving its Net Zero targets by 2070. He outlined specific goals, including reducing emission intensity by 45% by 2030 and increasing the use of non-fossil fuels to reach a 50% share.
Additionally, he emphasized that India is on track to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution targets.
Modi also called for a substantial increase in global climate finance commitments, advocating for a transition from billions to trillions in funding for addressing climate change challenges.
He expressed his anticipation for the summit’s proceedings, which focus on improving the planet. He previously noted the summit’s importance, emphasizing the UAE’s role as a key partner in climate action.
COP28, the 28th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is a significant global summit focused on addressing climate change. It brings together world leaders, environmental experts, and delegates from nearly 200 countries to discuss and implement strategies for combating global warming and promoting sustainable development.
