German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has announced that Germany will maintain 35,000 soldiers on high alert for NATO’s new strategy of deterrence and defense. This commitment also includes up to 200 aircraft, frigates, and patrol boats, among other assets.
During a NATO meeting in Brussels, Minister Pistorius stated, “This involves supporting regional defense plans with tangible forces, and these forces should be able to be called upon by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe starting in 2025.”
He added, “We’re really getting into everything, and this applies especially to the most critical military support capabilities like logistics services.”
Germany’s commitment is part of NATO’s planning for a new model of armed forces, which envisions maintaining 300,000 troops on high alert for potential NATO missions in the future. The Rapid Response Force, which has been available primarily for rapid crisis response operations, is currently supplied by member states with approximately 40,000 troops.
The backdrop for this reorganization is the threats posed by Russia. Since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order to invade Ukraine, NATO no longer entirely rules out taking action against member states. The Baltic states, including Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, are particularly concerned.
Precautionary measures have already been taken in the form of regional defense plans. Over 4,400 pages outline how to protect vital areas within the alliance’s region and defend them in emergency situations. The implementation will be made possible through the new armed forces model, according to a report in the Morgan Post.
As NATO recalibrates its military readiness, the world watches closely as the alliance adapts to evolving global security challenges.
