Germany plans to boost its humanitarian aid to Gaza by about €39 million, targeting urgent health needs and combating disease outbreaks, including cholera.
This initiative comes amid ongoing conflicts and worsening conditions in the region.
Sources within the German delegation in Brussels revealed that the additional funds will primarily support emergency health assistance in Gaza.
The decision highlights Germany’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in the territory.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, during a meeting with her European Union counterparts in Brussels, stressed the severity of the Middle East situation, noting that the ongoing suffering cannot persist.
Reflecting on the current developments, Baerbock emphasized the critical importance of adhering to international law.
She pointed out the increased rocket attacks on Tel Aviv by Hamas and the adverse impact of not releasing hostages on Israel’s security.
Baerbock reiterated that international law, including humanitarian law, applies universally and that the rulings of the International Court of Justice are binding and must be observed.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by a recent Israeli airstrike on Rafah in southern Gaza, which resulted in the death of at least 45 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Recently, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to cease its military operations in Rafah immediately. Although the court’s decisions are legally binding, UN judges lack the power to enforce them.
Germany’s increased aid aims to address these escalating humanitarian needs, reflecting a broader international concern over the ongoing conflict and its devastating impact on civilians in Gaza.
