The French authorities have announced their intention to deport dozens of suspected Russian extremists from their territory. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin revealed that France is set to commence the deportation process for 39 Russian individuals with alleged extremist ties and is awaiting approval from the Russian Federation for their return.
According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Darmanin stated in an interview with Radio RMC, “We have compiled a list of 39 Russian citizens whom we closely monitor for suspected extremism. We presented this list to the Russian authorities last week.” He emphasized the need to confirm whether these individuals are still Russian citizens.
The minister further explained, “The Russian authorities have responded by confirming the identity of these citizens. Once Russian authorities approve their return, we will initiate the deportation process.”
Under current French law, it is prohibited to expel or deport any foreign national who arrived in French territory before the age of 13. To amend this legislation, the French Interior Minister will need to find middle-ground solutions with other parties, particularly the Republicans, as he aims to allow authorities to deport “any foreign national who commits a serious crime” from French territory.
