French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin dismissed circulating rumors about the potential cancellation of the Paris Olympic Games due to the country’s political situation, describing it as a maneuver to tarnish France’s image and labeling it as “fake news.”
Darmanin stated in an interview with France 2 channel that “there are certain rumors that have spread to tarnish the image of France and the image of the President of the Republic.” He reminded that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has denied considering the cancellation of the Olympics and will wait until mid-month to make a decision.
The Interior Minister affirmed that “the International Olympic Committee has repeatedly confirmed that organizing the Olympic Games, if not ideal, has been done in the best possible manner. The American and Israeli teams praise the French police every day.”
He clarified that even the far-right candidate for prime minister in the legislative elections held last Sunday, with the second round scheduled for next Sunday, stated that “the Olympics are very well organized.”
Darmanin, who may be replaced due to the elections before the Olympics scheduled from July 26th to August 11th, also affirmed that the Olympic Games will proceed as planned
