French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné stressed the need for the European Union (EU) to bolster its defense capabilities and increase weapon production in response to the “Russian threat.”
In an interview with the Ouest-France newspaper, Séjourné affirmed the possibility of Russia attacking a NATO member state, highlighting France’s ongoing efforts to ramp up defense investment.
“This is an existential issue for the EU and our collective security hinges on it.
In the current geopolitical climate, we need military budgets that enable us to counter the threat and organize EU defense more effectively. Yes, it is essential that we intensify our efforts,” Séjourné stated.
He emphasized the necessity for Europe to secure “safety guarantees” and enhance military coordination and integration gradually.
Séjourné pointed out that the conflict in Ukraine has opened up possibilities previously deemed impossible, such as joint procurement of ammunition and missiles.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also voiced that the alliance must prepare for a potential long-term standoff with Russia, clarifying that NATO does not seek war with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously called on Europe to arm itself and develop joint production of weapons to face any global circumstance that may arise.
“Russia is helped circumvent by manufacturing companies or intermediary companies in Europe, the US – everywhere. And I would pay attention to this, especially those bodies that deal with sanctions policy,” Zelenskyy said.
