In a groundbreaking collaboration, Formula 1 and Amazon.com introduced “Statebot,” a new AI robot, during the Spanish Grand Prix.

This innovative technology aims to provide AI-enhanced personalized broadcasts to captivate viewers.

Statebot utilizes the extensive race archive and real-time data streams to offer live broadcast presenters immediate context and information during the Barcelona race.

This advanced system is powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), based in Seattle, according to Neil Ralph, the tech collaboration lead with Formula 1 at Amazon.

This initiative illustrates the growing integration of AI in media and Liberty Media’s continuous efforts to attract viewers.

Liberty Media, the owner of Formula 1, acquired the sport from CVC Capital Partners in 2016 under the guidance of cable TV mogul John C.

Malone. Since then, the focus has been on enhancing the sport’s global appeal and expanding its audience through strategic marketing efforts, such as the Netflix documentary series “Formula 1: Drive to Survive.”

In a sport dominated by engineering, where heroes are often hidden behind helmets, executives aim to inject more excitement into live race broadcasts.

AI technology is also being used to make in-race predictions, such as optimal pit stop times or drivers’ overtaking attempts, based on real-time details like car performance and tire wear.

Eric Giles, Managing Director of AWS in Canada, highlighted the potential for hyper-personalized experiences for fans during an interview at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal earlier this June.

“You can think of super personalized experiences given this data and familiarity with fans,” Giles noted.

Neil Ralph added, “This is where we aspire to be, allowing fans to choose the amount of data they want to see and the stories they want to hear.”
