FIFA, the global governing body for soccer, has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

FIFA’s action follows the release of a video showing Rubiales engaging in an unwelcome kiss with a prominent player from Spain’s victorious World Cup team.

The alleged actions are being examined under the context of Article 13, paragraphs 1 and 2, of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which pertain to violations of the game’s regulations, including breaches of appropriate behavior standards.

Rubiales, as the head of RFEF, is also encountering renewed pressure from key entities within Spanish women’s soccer due to his conduct following the World Cup triumph.

The union representing female soccer players in Spain has demanded accountability for his kiss on Jennifer Hermoso’s lips after the team’s victory. The union has expressed its commitment to combating sexism and gender bias.

Spain’s Association of Professional Soccer Players (FUTPRO) issued a statement asserting the importance of upholding values of equality and respect, particularly when representing the reigning world champion team.

FUTPRO is actively striving to ensure that such actions do not go unpunished and that appropriate measures are taken to safeguard players from actions that are deemed unacceptable.

The incident in question involves Rubiales forcibly kissing Jennifer Hermoso, the striker, following Spain’s 1-0 win against England.

Hermoso, who openly expressed her discomfort with the kiss, is receiving support from both the players’ union and her agency, TMJ, as they advocate for her interests in this matter.

FUTPRO’s statement reaffirms its dedication to fighting against sexual harassment, abuse, and gender biases.

The union underscores the necessity of progressing in the ongoing battle for equality, a cause championed by soccer players who have played a pivotal role in bringing the issue to the forefront of discussions.
