Josep Borrell, the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, has called for an independent investigation into the Israeli strike on a UNRWA school in Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians.
In a statement on Thursday, Borrell expressed his concerns on the social media platform X, stating, “Reports from Gaza once again show that violence and suffering remain the only reality for hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians. These horrific reports must be independently investigated.”
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) confirmed that Israel bombed a school under its administration in Gaza on Thursday “without prior warning.” Thousands of displaced Palestinians had taken refuge in the school.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini also commented on the incident via X, saying, “Another UNRWA school sheltering displaced people was attacked, this time in Nuseirat in the central areas. It was bombed by Israeli forces overnight without any prior warning to the displaced or to UNRWA.”
