The European Parliament, in a significant move on Thursday, resoundingly condemned Iran’s attacks on women, including the “brutal killing” of individuals such as young Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the morality police in Tehran for not adhering to the strict dress codes of the Islamic Republic.
In a non-binding resolution adopted by an overwhelming majority of 516 votes against 4, with 27 abstentions, the European Parliament vehemently denounced the continuous deterioration of human rights in Iran and the brutal killing of women by Iranian authorities.
This includes the posthumous awarding of the 2023 Sakharov Prize to Mahsa Amini, an honor given in recognition of her tragic death.
This decisive statement from the European Parliament brings significant international attention to the pressing issue of women’s rights in Iran.
The condemnation highlights the urgent need for change in the treatment of women under Iranian law and enforcement practices.
The case of Mahsa Amini and others like her has sparked global outrage and calls for justice, making this resolution a crucial step in the ongoing struggle for human rights and gender equality in Iran and beyond.
