The European Union has pledged new sanctions on Iran for supplying ballistic missiles to Russia, which are being used in the ongoing war against Ukraine.
The EU condemned Iran’s actions and labeled the missile supply as a direct threat to European security, escalating tensions compared to previous drone and ammunition deliveries from Tehran.
In a joint statement, the 27 EU member states emphasized that the missile transfer marks a significant escalation.
Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, took to “X” (formerly Twitter) to announce that the bloc will swiftly impose new sanctions on Iran’s missile and drone programs.
Iran firmly denied the accusation, rejecting claims by Western allies, including the US, of supplying combat drones to Russia.
The EU warned Iran several times about transferring ballistic missiles to Russia, and Germany, France, and the UK have recently vowed to impose further sanctions on Iran.
Sanctions have already been placed on ships and companies allegedly involved in supplying Russian forces with Iranian arms, including “Iran Air,” which operates flights to several European destinations.
