The European Union and Spain have allocated €15.5 million to support social allowances for vulnerable Palestinian families in the West Bank.
According to a statement released by the EU on Tuesday, this funding will benefit 27,561 at-risk families in the West Bank, providing them with critical financial assistance during these challenging times.
The EU supports the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Social Development in delivering essential social allowances to the most vulnerable families in the West Bank and Gaza through a cash transfer program. Due to the current financial crisis faced by the Palestinian Authority, the EU and Spain have stepped in to cover two delayed payments for eligible beneficiaries in both the West Bank and Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis is intensifying.
This comprehensive approach aims to reach as many vulnerable families as possible and meet their basic needs amid the ongoing conflict. The EU noted that this social allowance payment is part of the short-term emergency financial support for Palestine to address the most urgent needs.
The funding will target 27,561 extremely poor families, individuals with severe disabilities, and elderly people over 65 without pensions in the West Bank. The EU’s Pegase mechanism channels and verifies the eligibility of the funds.
Various independent and external checks are conducted before and after the EU disbursements. The EU is contributing €13.5 million, while Spain is providing €2 million.
