The European Union has announced a €9 million support package for the Somali government, recognizing its ability to maintain macroeconomic stability and implement key reforms aimed at enhancing public financial management.

This funding will assist the Somali government’s efforts to mobilize local revenues, strengthen its federal financial agenda, and continue providing public education services, particularly through the National Teacher Initiative, as reported by the Somali News Agency (SONNA).

Karen Johansen, the EU Ambassador to Somalia, emphasized that this budget support disbursement reflects the EU’s strong commitment to the progress Somalia has made in responsibly and transparently managing its public finances. She described it as a powerful signal of the EU’s dedication to the development of Somalia and the ongoing implementation of the shared roadmap between the EU and Somalia.

Somalia’s Minister of Finance, Baji Iman Aji, stated that EU budget support provides essential funding and assistance for the federal government to implement significant financial governance reforms and greatly enhance the provision of essential social services in Somalia.

Since 2018, the EU has cumulatively disbursed a total of €101.4 million under its current and previous financial support programs as budget assistance to the Somali government.

The European Union remains committed to continuing its support for economic development and financial governance in Somalia through ongoing budget support and technical assistance.

The EU’s support comes at a crucial time as Somalia grapples with various challenges, including economic instability and the need for reforms. The country’s political landscape has been marked by efforts to stabilize governance and enhance public service delivery amid ongoing security concerns.

By investing in Somalia’s capacity to manage its finances and improve service provision, the EU aims to foster long-term stability and development in the region.
