The Chairman of the Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC), Farhat Bengdara, met with Nicola Orlando, Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Libya, to discuss cooperation in the sustainable development of the oil, gas, renewable energy, and environmental sectors, as well as energy interconnection.

During the meeting, held in Tripoli on Monday, both sides agreed to work together on reducing methane emissions and to support Libya’s commitment to eliminating gas flaring, which involves the burning of natural gas through flares. Nicola Orlando emphasized that the shared priorities of Libya and the EU include increasing oil and gas production sustainably and utilizing Libya’s enormous potential in the field of renewable energy.

Orlando expressed the EU’s desire to deepen its partnership with Libya in the realm of sustainable energy, highlighting the importance of collaboration to ensure that Libya’s hydrocarbon sector is environmentally responsible while taking advantage of the country’s renewable energy capabilities. This cooperation aims to support Libya in its transition toward clean energy while protecting the environment and reducing harmful emissions.

Recently, the EU launched partnerships with Libya in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German government. These initiatives aim to support Libya’s renewable energy transition, enhance energy efficiency, and adapt to climate change. These projects not only address environmental issues but also aim to ensure Libya’s energy security and economic growth in the long term
