The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, is embarking on a two-day visit to Lebanon starting January 5th to discuss the situation along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Violent clashes erupted across the border between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia on October 8th, following a widespread offensive by the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas.
In a statement, the European Union emphasized that Borrell’s visit aims to underscore the importance of avoiding regional escalation.
The statement further noted that Borrell will reiterate the need to enhance diplomatic efforts with regional leaders.”
Just yesterday, Israel’s Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, conveyed to the US Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Amos Hochstein, that there is a “short time window for diplomatic understandings with Hezbollah.”
The Israeli Defense Minister clarified to the US envoy that “there is only one possible outcome – a new reality in the northern arena that will enable the safe return of our citizens,” as reported by the Times of Israel, citing Gallant’s office.
Despite the situation at a crossroads, the Israeli Minister stressed the existence of a brief timeframe for diplomatic negotiations, which is the preferred path. He added, “We will not tolerate the threats posed by Iran’s proxy, Hezbollah, and we will ensure the security of our citizens.”
