Prime Minister Kaja Kallas officially submitted her resignation today, Monday, as she prepares to take on a prominent new role as the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, succeeding Josep Borrell, later this year.
According to Estonia’s ERR network, Kallas tendered her resignation to President Alar Karis during a meeting held at the presidential palace in the capital, Tallinn.
Technically, Kallas will remain the head of the government until the new coalition is sworn in.
Kallas has served as Prime Minister since 2021, leading three consecutive governments.
She is also expected to step down as the head of the Reform Party later this summer.
Under Kallas’ leadership, Estonia has been one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine following Russia’s military operation in February 2022.
The new government is likely to assume office at the beginning of August.
Kallas expressed her pride in taking on this new responsibility, stating that the ongoing war in Europe and the increasing regional instability are the primary challenges for European foreign policy.
