The Egyptian Armed Forces announced a successful operation by the Navy in intercepting an attempt to smuggle large quantities of the narcotic plant, “Bango,” along the coast near Sharm El-Sheikh.
The military spokesperson stated that a coastal surveillance point of the Red Sea Naval Base detected unusual activity involving unauthorized fishing boats as part of the armed forces’ efforts to secure and protect the nation’s borders across all strategic directions.
Following the detection, the General Command of the Armed Forces immediately ordered a naval unit to intercept and inspect the suspected fishing vessel.
The navy successfully seized 345 bundles of the Bango narcotic onboard.
The seized narcotics were transferred and handed over to the navy for legal proceedings, the military spokesperson added.
This operation highlights the ongoing vigilance and effectiveness of the Egyptian Navy in combating illegal activities and ensuring the security of maritime boundaries.
Last week, the authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle a large drug shipment weighing approximately 3.5 tons, estimated to be worth around EGP 250 million.
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior, in a statement released on Friday, indicated that the General Administration for Drug Control, in coordination with relevant security agencies, had obtained intelligence about a highly dangerous criminal.
This individual, residing in the Fayed Police Center jurisdiction in Ismailia (east of Cairo), was planning to transport and smuggle a substantial amount of drugs from the eastern side of the Suez Canal to the west.
The drugs were concealed in a furniture moving truck, intended for distribution across various provinces.
Egypt has been intensifying its efforts against drug trafficking and abuse, employing comprehensive strategies involving law enforcement and social initiatives.
