Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has stated that the destruction in the Gaza Strip has reached an unprecedented level, emphasizing Cairo’s stance since October 7 against “targeting civilians from all sides.”

Speaking at a UN Security Council session on Wednesday, Shoukry clarified that nearly two-thirds of Gaza’s population has been displaced, witnessing widespread violations of international humanitarian law.

Shoukry added, “The Israeli approach over the past 50 days represents a deliberate policy to make life in Gaza impossible,” warning of the “impact of displacing Palestinians on peace in the entire region.”

He also pointed out that “the concept of self-defense cannot contradict international humanitarian law,” noting that “the policy of forced displacement in Gaza remains a goal for Israel, paralleled by a policy in the West Bank that drives out the Palestinian people.”

Shoukry emphasized the necessity of stopping the “damned war” before considering the aftermath, affirming Egypt’s continued efforts to extend the truce in Gaza. He also mentioned the successful hostage exchange deal facilitated by Egypt in cooperation with Qatar and the United States.

Shoukry highlighted that the aid provided to Gaza so far is insufficient for the needs of its inhabitants, stressing that “the Palestinian issue should be addressed in a manner that leads to ending the occupation.”

Shoukry continued, “We must unite to enforce the internationally agreed solution of two states. The time has come to formulate a political framework to end the transitional phase and start implementing the two-state solution.”

Earlier, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that “any scenario targeting the displacement of Palestinians to Egyptian territory will be met with a decisive response in accordance with international law.”

The truce between Hamas and Israel ended on Wednesday, with the world’s attention focused on Gaza. Both parties worked after midnight on Wednesday to release the last batch of hostages and prisoners, with expectations of extending the truce.

This situation in Gaza represents a critical point in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where the humanitarian crisis has escalated to unprecedented levels. The international community, as emphasized by Egypt’s Foreign Minister, is deeply concerned about the situation. The call for immediate action reflects the urgent need for a sustainable resolution to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians in the region. The reference to the two-state solution underlines the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict and the necessity of a political framework that addresses the root causes of the crisis.

Egypt’s active role in facilitating dialogue and aid, along with its emphasis on adherence to international law, highlights the country’s position as a key mediator in the region. The Egyptian government’s stance underscores the importance of collaborative efforts among nations to address complex international issues such as this. The continuation of diplomatic efforts and the search for a peaceful resolution are vital to stabilizing the region and providing a sustainable future for all parties involved.
