Egypt has called for swift international efforts to end the “bloody fighting” in Sudan and ensure the safe passage of humanitarian aid to innocent civilians, highlighting the necessity to preserve all Sudanese state institutions.
This appeal was made by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty during a ministerial meeting on Sudan, held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his address, which was published by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, Abdel Atty expressed Egypt’s support for regional and international initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and defusing the crisis in Sudan.
He commended the global efforts to reach a ceasefire and expressed Egypt’s readiness to assist in stabilizing Sudan and facilitating the delivery of relief and humanitarian aid throughout the country.
Abdel Atty emphasized Egypt’s “firm commitment to achieving peace and stability in Sudan,” referring to the initiative launched by Sudan’s neighbouring countries in July 2023 and its participation in the “International Paris Conference to Support Sudan and Neighboring Countries.”
He also mentioned hosting the “Sudanese Civil Political Forces Conference” in Cairo in July 2024, aiming to achieve consensus on building comprehensive and lasting peace in Sudan through an inclusive Sudanese dialogue without external interventions.
The Egyptian minister reiterated the importance of quickly ending the ongoing violence, successfully transitioning to a new phase, and allowing humanitarian aid for innocent civilians, while stressing the need to maintain Sudanese state institutions.
On Wednesday, Abdel Atty met with Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chief, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in New York.
During the meeting, Abdel Atty conveyed greetings from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and emphasized Egypt’s continued efforts to support the Sudanese people in overcoming their crisis and preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and institutional integrity.
In further meetings in New York, Abdel Atty appealed to Achim Steiner, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, to focus on the humanitarian situation in Sudan, underscoring the urgency of the conditions facing the Sudanese people.
