Egypt has achieved another milestone in its series of successes on the African stage by being elected as a member of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council for the term 2024-2026.

Garnering an impressive 44 votes out of a possible 46 from the voting members of the African Union, Egypt’s election to the council represents a significant vote of confidence from its African counterparts in its capabilities to contribute effectively to this vital area of concern.

This widespread support reflects the trust that fellow African nations place in Egypt’s ability to play a constructive role in the Peace and Security Council, a trust that has been reinforced by Egypt’s proactive and impactful participation in the council in previous terms, including the most recent one during 2020-2022.

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) is a crucial body within the AU framework, tasked with the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts across the continent.

The PSC’s mandate includes peace-making, peace-building, and peacekeeping activities, making it a central pillar in the AU’s efforts to promote peace, security, and stability in Africa.

Egypt’s re-election to the PSC underscores its ongoing commitment to contributing to continental peace and security initiatives.

Egypt’s strategic position in North Africa, coupled with its historical and political significance in the region, allows it to bring valuable insights and leadership to the council’s deliberations and activities.

This achievement also aligns with Egypt’s broader foreign policy goals of strengthening its ties with African nations and playing a pivotal role in advancing the continent’s peace and security agenda.
Egypt’s active engagement in the PSC is expected to continue to enhance its diplomatic relations and influence within the African Union and beyond.
