On Saturday, Egypt’s Minister of State for Migration and Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs, Soha Gendi, announced that Cairo is closely monitoring the developments of a 2023 incident involving the sinking of an illegal migration boat off the Iranian coast in June.
The boat was carrying about 700 people of various nationalities, with 42 Egyptian nationals among the survivors.
Eight of these Egyptian survivors were detained on charges related to causing the sinking and participating in a human trafficking ring. However, they were recently acquitted by a court in Kalamata, Greece.
Minister Gendi stated that she is keeping a close eye on the situation, coordinating with Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Egyptian ambassador in Athens.
She is focused on the proceedings and measures concerning the release of the detained Egyptians.
The ministry is also actively involved in defending these individuals and providing the necessary documents and papers, ensuring the safety and welfare of Egyptian citizens abroad.
Gendi also highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Egypt and Greece, especially in combating illegal migration. She emphasized the joint efforts of both countries to promote legal migration channels and protect citizens’ rights.
