Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with China during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, aimed at enhancing cooperation between Egypt and China in telecommunications and information technology.
The first MoU, between Egypt’s IT Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and FiberHome Telecommunication Technologies, will establish a factory in Egypt to produce fibre optic cables, creating 200 jobs. The factory will cover 10,000 square metres, producing one million fibre kilometres annually.
The second MoU, with Tsinghua Unigroup and Telecom Egypt, involves setting up a data centre and cloud services in Egypt, alongside a $300 million tech investment fund. The agreement also includes research in semiconductor design and artificial intelligence applications.
Huawei Egypt will expand its operations under the third MoU by launching a development centre focusing on local industry solutions and cloud computing, training 1,500 developers by 2025.
In the fourth MoU, ZTE will work with ITIDA and the National Telecommunications Institute (NTI) to produce network stations and optical fibre equipment, and establish two training labs for 5G technology, training 1,200 participants.
The fifth MoU, signed with Hengtong Group, involves establishing a fibre optic cable factory in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, with 40 percent of production exported to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
