Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Expatriates Badr Abdel Atti emphasized the importance of maintaining Sudanese state institutions, providing humanitarian aid to Sudan and neighboring countries, and ensuring that the Sudanese people retain ownership of the political process.

This statement came during a meeting with Tom Periello, the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters.

In a statement on Thursday, Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that Dr. Abdel Atti welcomed the consultation and coordination between Egypt and the United States regarding efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan. He highlighted Egypt’s efforts to restore security and stability in Sudan and its neighboring countries, including the Egyptian initiative involving Sudanese political and civil forces.

The spokesperson indicated that both parties discussed regional and international efforts to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire in Sudan and enhance the delivery of humanitarian aid. This included a call for negotiations in Switzerland between the conflicting parties. Egypt expressed its appreciation for the invitation to participate in these talks.

Both sides expressed hope that these efforts will make progress and help end the suffering of the Sudanese people.

Dr. Abdel Atti stressed the urgency of fulfilling commitments to provide support to Sudan and neighboring countries hosting Sudanese refugees, as pledged during relevant international conferences.

For his part, U.S. Special Envoy Tom Periello expressed his country’s appreciation for Egypt’s efforts at various levels to mitigate the Sudan crisis, including facilitating a shared vision among Sudanese political forces and hosting hundreds of thousands of Sudanese fleeing the war.

Periello also expressed hope for continued coordination and consultation with Egypt to end the conflict and restore security and stability in Sudan as quickly as possible.
