Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Badr Abdel Aaty, stressed the importance of involving Sudan in any arrangements or proposals related to settling its crisis, to preserve the ownership of these solutions by the Sudanese people. This statement was made during his meeting with Bankole Adeoye, the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, on the sidelines of the sixth session of the African Union’s Coordination Summit held in Accra, Ghana, as reported by Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry.

Abdel Aaty expressed Egypt’s commitment to consultation and coordination with the African Union Commissioner on various issues related to peace and security in Africa. He highlighted Egypt’s efforts to support the African Union and its various organs and its active involvement through its membership in the African Union’s Peace and Security Council to strengthen peace infrastructure and stability across the continent.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the latest political and security developments in the Sudanese crisis, agreeing on the importance of unifying Sudanese civil political forces, preserving the unity of Sudan and its national institutions, and coordinating efforts between regional and international mediation tracks.

Abdel Aaty also mentioned Egypt’s awareness of the critical situation and its eagerness to engage with all relevant partners and existing mechanisms to resolve the crisis swiftly. Furthermore, he welcomed the Peace and Security Council’s approval of the Somali government’s request to extend the timeframe for the third phase of the ATMIS mission and discussed arrangements for deploying a new African Union mission in Somalia after the current mission’s withdrawal, emphasizing the need to provide all support to the Somali government to achieve security and stability.

The meeting also touched on the Great Lakes region, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, security challenges in the Red Sea, and developments in the Horn of Africa countries.

Adeoye reaffirmed Egypt’s pivotal role in enhancing security and stability on the African continent and expressed his intention to continue coordinating with Egypt on all priority African issues and matters concerning the African Union.
