Controversial Dutch seismologist Frank Hoogerbeets has issued a stark warning of a potential catastrophic earthquake and the looming threat of a tsunami in the upcoming days, specifically targeting the regions of Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.

In a blog post released on Wednesday, Hoogerbeets pointed to a heightened risk of seismic activity in this area, emphasizing the timeframe between September 19 and 21. He cited a confluence of factors contributing to this peril, including planetary and lunar alignment, alongside geological stresses embedded within the region.

Hoogerbeets urged caution for residents in the coastal areas of Portugal, Spain, and Morocco, emphasizing the gravity of the potential danger. He expressed concerns of a substantial seismic event that could potentially trigger a tsunami, causing devastating consequences.

The seismologist’s predictions have not been without controversy, and some members of the scientific community have criticized his claims of earthquake prediction. Nevertheless, Hoogerbeets has received acknowledgment for accurately forecasting several significant earthquakes in recent years, notably including a devastating earthquake in Turkey in February 2023, which claimed the lives of over 50,000 individuals.

Elaborating further, Hoogerbeets expounded on the planetary and lunar alignment occurring on September 19 and 20, which he described as creating a “perfect storm” for seismic activity within the region. He asserted that the alignment of the planets would exert a significant gravitational pull on Earth’s crust, potentially leading to fractures and upheavals.

Adding to the existing concerns, Hoogerbeets highlighted the considerable geological stress already bearing down on the area. Situated on a fault line traversing the Atlantic Ocean, the region has a historical track record of major earthquakes, with the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake responsible for the tragic loss of more than 10,000 lives.

While Hoogerbeets emphasized the impossibility of providing definitive assurances regarding an impending earthquake, he emphasized the heightened risk as a compelling reason for residents in the affected regions to remain prepared. He recommended proactive measures such as having emergency kits, knowledge of tsunami evacuation protocols, and awareness of local evacuation routes in case of a seismic event.
