China has unveiled the world’s premier standard for the geothermal energy industry. The announcement was made during the Global Geothermal Energy Conference 2023, which emphasized practices related to medium to low-temperature geothermal heating.

The state-run Chinese news agency, Xinhua, reported on Monday that prior tests conducted in the Hebei province in northern China showed that the new standard promises sustainable development and efficient utilization of geothermal heating projects. Significant contributors to this benchmark include China’s Sinopec, China National Petroleum Corporation, Tsinghua University, China University of Petroleum, and China University of Geosciences.

Interestingly, this year marks the first time China has played host to the Global Geothermal Energy Conference. The event, themed “Clean Geothermal Energy, Green Earth,” was held at the National Geothermal Energy Center and organized by the Chinese firm Sinopec. Spanning from Friday to the past Sunday, the conference witnessed the presence of over 1,400 attendees from 54 countries.

Geothermal energy, derived from the Earth’s internal heat, has been gaining prominence globally as a clean and sustainable energy source. As countries grapple with the pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the adoption and standardization of renewable energy sources like geothermal become paramount.

China, a major player in the global energy market, has been significantly investing in research and innovations related to geothermal energy. The introduction of a standard not only strengthens China’s stance on renewable energy but also offers a framework for other nations to emulate, fostering global collaboration in the fight against climate change.
