Colo Colo footballer Jordhy Thompson has been charged with attempted femicide, domestic violence, and contempt following another assault on his partner.
The judiciary has taken into account the evidence presented by the Public Ministry and has decided to remand the player in custody at Santiago 1 prison.
Prosecutor Patricia Villablanca of the Eastern Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office reported that Thompson faces charges of “attempted femicide and contempt amid domestic violence.”
The severity of the accusations led to the Public Ministry’s call for his preventive detention to ensure the victim’s safety.
Villablanca noted the typical defense strategy of undermining the victim’s credibility in cases of domestic violence. However, she affirmed the Public Ministry’s belief in the victim’s account and proceeded with the formal indictment for attempted femicide.
A 45-day investigative period has been set by the court during which Thompson will be detained in Santiago 1 prison.
The reported assault took place at approximately 1:00 a.m. on a Monday, after the victim approached the Carabineros (Chilean national police force) to report various injuries caused by the Colo Colo player.
It should be noted that this incident is not Thompson’s first accusation of gender violence; he was previously arrested in April of the same year.
Evidence from that incident, including images from a nightclub and videos recorded by the victim, along with other reported acts of violence, contribute to the ongoing pattern of abuse attributed to Thompson.
