On Sunday, Canada’s Minister of Defense Bill Blair announced that Canada will contribute $33 million Canadian dollars (equivalent to $24.5 million USD) as part of a partnership led by the United Kingdom to purchase air defense equipment for Ukraine.
This aid aims to assist Ukraine in countering Russian attacks, including missile strikes and drones.
In a statement, Blair emphasized that this financial contribution is part of a larger military assistance package worth $500 million Canadian dollars pledged by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Kyiv in June of the previous year, as reported by Reuters.
Canada has been a vocal and staunch supporter of Ukraine and hosts one of the world’s largest Ukrainian diaspora communities.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ottawa has committed to providing over $8 billion Canadian dollars in assistance, including approximately $1.8 billion Canadian dollars in military aid.
The partnership, which also includes the United States, the Netherlands, and Denmark, aims to purchase hundreds of short and medium-range air defense missiles along with associated systems.
This move is part of broader international efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against ongoing security threats.
