Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, accused Israel on Saturday of the “mass killing of Palestinians” following the death of over 110 individuals, according to Hamas, due to Israeli gunfire and a stampede during a gathering for aid in the Gaza Strip. He called for an international investigation.
The Union stated in a statement dated Friday and published on Saturday on the “X” platform that “Mahamat strongly condemns an attack carried out by Israeli forces, which resulted in the death and injury of over 100 Palestinians seeking life-saving humanitarian aid.”
The statement added, “Mahamat calls for an international investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable and urges an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.”
Israeli forces opened fire as Palestinians scrambled for food supplies on Thursday in an incident that the Hamas-run Health Ministry said resulted in the death of over 100 people in Gaza City.
This tragedy followed a warning from a World Food Programme official that “famine is imminent in northern Gaza unless something changes.”
An Israeli military official acknowledged “limited gunfire” from soldiers who felt “threatened” and spoke of a stampede during which “dozens of residents were killed and injured, and some were run over by aid trucks.”
