Ambassador Hossam Zaki, the Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, participated in meetings held on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly regarding Sudan on Wednesday. The first meeting, which focused on the humanitarian response in Sudan, was co-sponsored by the United Nations, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, with the presence of Hussein Awad, the Sudanese Foreign Minister.

Ambassador Zaki emphasized in his statement that the deteriorating humanitarian situation, the increasing threats of famine, food insecurity, and the scarcity of life-saving medicines necessitate urgent financial support to fund coordinated short-term plans for food aid delivery to restore livelihoods and save the agricultural season.

Additionally, the Assistant Secretary-General participated in a high-level meeting on supporting peace in Sudan, attended by a wide range of Arab and Western countries and relevant regional and international organizations. In the Arab League’s statement, Ambassador Zaki stressed the necessity of preserving Sudanese state institutions. He emphasized that establishing mechanisms for monitoring the ceasefire, protecting Sudanese civilians, and preventing the flow of arms, in accordance with Security Council resolutions, is a full Sudanese responsibility.

The Assistant Secretary-General also expressed the Arab League’s readiness to coordinate and cooperate on the fastest and best ways and mechanisms to end the civil strife, safeguard the country’s national institutions and assets, and support the restoration of peace and security in Sudan.
