The General Secretariat of the Arab League affirmed today, Thursday, that it is closely monitoring ongoing efforts and initiatives aimed at halting the ongoing war in Sudan. The most recent of these efforts includes the resumption of Jeddah talks to secure a ceasefire in Geneva, all within the framework of the mandate given by the Arab League Council at various levels.
In a statement, the General Secretariat explained that its invitation, which has not yet been received, to participate in the Geneva efforts is viewed as the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2736, dated June 13, 2024. This resolution, particularly in its operative paragraph 8, emphasized “coordinated engagement with the African Union, the Arab League, and other key regional actors to help advance peace in Sudan.” This highlights the significant priority the Arab League places on issues of peace and security in Sudan, recognizing it as an important Arab nation and a bridge between Arab and African communication.
The General Secretariat of the Arab League reaffirmed its commitment to the Arab position on the situation in Sudan. It stressed the necessity of harmonizing Arab, African, and international actions to achieve peace in Sudan, while fully respecting its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Furthermore, the Secretariat emphasized the importance of preserving Sudan’s national institutions, particularly its armed forces, and the full implementation of the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 11, 2023.
