The 88th meeting of the Executive Office for Arab Ministers of Housing and Urban Development is currently underway at the headquarters of the Arab League’s General Secretariat. The meeting, which includes the participation of relevant ministers from member states such as Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Bahrain, Somalia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan, addresses critical topics on its agenda.
Among the key subjects being discussed at the meeting are the latest developments related to the Fifth Arab Ministerial Forum on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, with a focus on “Localizing Sustainable Development Goals for Reconstruction and Disaster Response” in the Libyan capital. Additionally, the meeting involves selecting the theme for Arab Housing Day in 2024.
The gathering also explores collaboration with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and reviews the progress made in implementing the Global Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the Executive Plan of the Arab Strategy for Housing and Urban Development. This includes cooperation with relevant Arab, regional, and international organizations and unions.
Furthermore, the meeting examines significant experiences in Arab countries related to social housing, showcases pioneering projects in the field of housing and urban development, and assesses the legislations governing the housing and urban development sector.
The Executive Office also discusses its support for the training of personnel in the housing and urban development sector in Somalia and provides assistance to Yemen in its reconstruction efforts. Additionally, the meeting highlights studies and experiences related to rehabilitating cities affected by conflicts and discusses land in Arab territories under Israeli occupation as well as natural disasters.
Moreover, it underscores the League’s commitment to supporting Palestine in achieving sustainable housing for its citizens. This meeting serves as a platform for collaboration and the exchange of insights to address housing and urban development challenges across the Arab world.
