Algerian security agencies have thwarted a sinister terror plot orchestrated by the separatist group MAK, designed to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections and create chaos.
A total of 21 individuals linked to this terrorist organization have been arrested.
According to the Algerian Ministry of Defense, security forces in the northeastern part of the country apprehended an individual actively involved in a terrorist network.
This suspect was found in possession of a cache of firearms and ammunition concealed in his vehicle, intended for illegal entry into Algeria to fuel potential terror activities.
The ministry’s statement highlighted that the accused confessed to his involvement with the terrorist group MAK and detailed that the seized weapons were purchased for smuggling into Algeria as part of a well-coordinated plan devised by the organization’s network operating in France.
These weapons were destined for distribution among various dormant cells belonging to MAK, operating covertly to utilize them in potential terror operations, orchestrated in collusion with foreign intelligence services hostile to Algeria, aiming to sow discord and destabilize security to impede the smooth conduct of the elections.
The statement further noted that the accused, identified as “Zaidi Moussa,” was accompanied by his wife and had arrived from the port of Marseille, France.
Alongside the weapons and ammunition, he was also carrying a significant amount of foreign currency and other securely hidden items in his vehicle for illegal entry into the country.
Following this information, specialized security forces successfully apprehended 19 members of this terrorist network and seized a considerable quantity of weapons found in an unlicensed arms repair workshop in the suburbs of Bejaia, in northeastern Algeria.
The operation led to the confiscation of 46 firearms of various calibers, a substantial amount of ammunition, 10 bladed weapons, materials for manufacturing ammunition, a GPS device, and other items.
It is noted that the separatist organization MAK, formally known as the “Movement for the Self-determination of the Kabylie Region,” is considered illegal in Algeria and was officially designated as a “terrorist” group on May 18 last year.
