French police detained Algerian defender Youcef Atal, who plays for Nice, on a precautionary basis on Friday, after he was accused of “defending terrorism” due to a video he posted about the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.
This information was confirmed by the Nice public prosecutor, following initial reports from the Nice-Matin newspaper.
27-year-old Atal promptly removed the post and issued an apology. However, his club decided on October 18 to suspend him indefinitely.
Subsequently, the disciplinary committee of the French Football League imposed a seven-game suspension on him at the end of last month.
An investigation was initiated following a notification to the public prosecutor’s office by the city of Nice.
This incident highlights the sensitive nature of political expression among professional athletes and the resulting impact on their careers and public perception.
The case has sparked discussions about freedom of expression and its boundaries, especially in the context of international conflicts and sports.
