In a significant diplomatic move, Algeria has submitted an official request to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Ataf, on Wednesday.
During a meeting held in Algiers on the same day, Ahmed Ataf and his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, expressed mutual appreciation for the strong bilateral relations between the two nations. They conveyed their commitment to further enhancing partnership and cooperation.
Attaf, emphasizing the enduring historical ties between Algeria and Indonesia, particularly on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, highlighted the deep-rooted brotherhood, mutual trust, and historical solidarity. He underscored that this connection serves as an extension of Indonesia’s unwavering support for Algeria’s liberation revolution.
During a press conference, the minister conveyed Algeria’s readiness to invigorate the longstanding relations with Indonesia, focusing on economic, political, and social cooperation. Attaf outlined that bilateral discussions with the Indonesian counterpart resulted in the signing of two legal texts. These texts primarily pertain to diplomatic cooperation, including the waiver of visa requirements for diplomatic and mission passports, as well as collaboration in the energy and mines sector.
