Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who is running for a second term in the upcoming presidential election on September 7, reaffirmed his country’s ongoing efforts within the United Nations to secure full membership for Palestine, following the recognition of the State of Palestine by 144 countries in the UN General Assembly.

This declaration was made during a campaign speech delivered to his supporters in the city of Oran, in western Algeria.

Tebboune emphasized that Algeria will also continue its international efforts to hold the Israeli occupation accountable in international courts for the atrocities committed against Palestinian children, elderly, and women in the Gaza Strip.

In a different context, Tebboune reiterated his commitment to enhancing the purchasing power of citizens by raising wages, combating inflation, and increasing the value of the national currency. He also pledged to continue supporting and developing the agricultural sector, solving the issue of animal feed, and completely halting the import of durum wheat starting in 2026.

Since the onset of the Gaza conflict on October 7, Algeria has played a proactive role in advocating for Palestinian rights on the international stage. Algeria has been vocal in its criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza and has repeatedly pushed for a ceasefire through various channels, including the United Nations. Algeria’s efforts include submitting resolutions to the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire and condemning Israeli military actions. However, these resolutions have faced vetoes from the United States, which has argued that such resolutions might undermine ongoing negotiations and peace efforts.

Furthermore, Algeria, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, has consistently supported humanitarian initiatives for Gaza, including proposals for building hospitals in the strip once conditions allow. President Tebboune has expressed Algeria’s readiness to provide military and medical assistance to Gaza, showcasing Algeria’s commitment to supporting Palestinians not just diplomatically but also through tangible aid efforts
