The Secretary-General of the Algerian Foreign Ministry, Lounas Magramane, stressed the importance of combined international and African efforts to address security, stability, and development challenges in Africa, particularly in the Sahel region.
He emphasized the necessity for early warning systems for crises, peaceful resolution of international disputes, confidence-building measures, and post-conflict reconstruction and development.
His remarks were made during the official opening of an international training camp on Sunday in the Algerian capital. The event, co-organized by Algeria and Romania, focused on “Enhancing Stability and Post-Conflict Reconstruction in the Sahel Region.”
At the outset of his speech, Magramane expressed hope for swift international intervention to halt the bloodshed and ensure the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, emphasizing their right to establish an independent state within the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.
He highlighted the principle of “African solutions to African problems,” referencing Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s approach to a smooth and secure political breakthrough in Niger.
This stance aligns with Algeria’s foreign policy doctrine, which promotes peaceful regional dispute resolution and rejects foreign interference and the use of force as a conflict solution.
Magramane also pointed to Algeria’s commitment to economic and social development in Africa, especially in the Sahel.
This is evident in President Tebboune’s establishment of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, backed with significant resources, particularly a dedicated fund of one billion dollars for the continent.
On the diplomatic front, the Secretary-General reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to defending the interests of the African continent, particularly during its upcoming tenure in the United Nations Security Council for the period 2024-2025.
