Algerian authorities have reported that their civil services are currently engaged in a significant struggle to contain massive wildfires that erupted in four southeastern provinces, leading to substantial material damage and considerable destruction of agricultural lands.
The fires, which erupted swiftly on Wednesday evening, have primarily affected the oases in the provinces of Ouargla, El Menia, Timimoun, and M’Sila. These wildfires have decimated dozens of hectares of palm trees and resulted in the deaths of numerous animals. Following these events, the police have initiated an investigation to pinpoint the exact causes of the fires.
According to a statement released by the Civil Protection Services on Thursday, although several of the fires have been brought under control, the effort to fully extinguish them continues. Firefighting teams are working tirelessly to prevent the flames from spreading to residential areas, a task made more challenging by strong winds. These conditions have heightened concerns about the potential for the fires to expand and the difficulty in managing them effectively. The firefighting efforts are being bolstered by local citizens, who are actively participating in the containment efforts.
