Sudan’s head of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met today in New York with the President of Comoros and African Union (AU) leader, Ghazali Othmani.
The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly sessions, centered on issues of mutual interest.
According to a statement released on Friday by the media office of the Sovereign Council, General al-Burhan briefed the AU leader on the current situation in Sudan.
This briefing particularly highlighted the rebellion by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against the state and the severe violations they have perpetrated against the Sudanese people, including targeting civilians.
Al-Burhan expressed gratitude for the efforts made by African nations to reestablish security and stability in Sudan.
The involvement of influential African leaders in the Sudanese situation underscores the continent’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in its member nations.
Al Burhan underscored the RSF’s collaborations with local, regional, and global militias and their recruitment of mercenaries from different corners of the world.
He also highlighted the RSF’s encroachments upon vital civic archives – land records, court documents, and civil directories. He recounted their looting of banks and businesses, coupled with the release of prisoners, some of whom have international arrest warrants and are known terrorists.
Stressing the severity of the RSF’s actions, Al-Burhan called them out for crimes against humanity and war crimes across vast swathes of Sudan. Their other atrocities, he noted, include sexual violence, ethnic purging, and brutal acts of torture.
Al Burhan urged the international community to classify the RSF and their affiliated groups as terrorist organizations, advocating for a collective stance against their activities.
He voiced concerns about the repercussions of the ongoing strife, cautioning that it has the potential to ignite broader regional instability.
