The African Union has intervened in the Sudanese crisis, launching the high-level African Union mechanism for the Sudanese political process in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, under the auspices of the African Union, which was boycotted by major political blocs and movements according to the Sudan Tribune newspaper.
The meeting, scheduled from July 10 to 15, discusses ending the war, delivering humanitarian aid, and laying the foundations for a comprehensive political solution.
The African Union’s Peace and Security Council revealed the formation of a special committee of African government heads to communicate with the conflicting parties in Sudan, Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, with the aim of immediately and unconditionally stopping the fighting.
Manguel Membie, the president of the African Union Peace and Security Council, stated in his opening speech that the African Union has decided to hold an extraordinary African summit on Sudan in the coming months. He described the situation in Sudan as catastrophic, confirming that the council’s last meeting at the presidential level agreed that stopping the fighting is a top priority.
He expressed the council’s deep concern about foreign interventions that exacerbate the conflict by providing financial and military support to the parties involved.
In the same context, the executive secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu, stated that since the outbreak of the war, the organization has helped bring the parties to the negotiating table, but these efforts were halted due to obstruction by the supporters of this conflict.
During his speech at the preparatory meeting, he emphasized that dialogue is necessary to restore constitutional order in Sudan and highlighted the importance of the political process being inclusive and broadly representative.
Adkony Bankole, the African Union commissioner’s representative and head of political and security affairs at the commission, described the first round of consultations as significant in his opening speech, mentioning that the preparatory process for the political operation was in cooperation with the African Union Peace and Security Council, the Arab League, the United States, and IGAD.
