African Airlines has firmly denied rumours that one of its aircraft was detained in Niger over accumulated debts.
The airline confirmed that it has no outstanding obligations to the Nigerian authorities.
On Sunday, the airline announced that its aircraft had departed from Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger, heading back to Mitiga Airport in Libya.
The plane had been conducting flights between King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and Niamey, primarily transporting pilgrims.
The company clarified that the aircraft’s extended stay at Niamey Airport was due to a delay in the Jeddah/Niamey flight, which necessitated an extended rest period for the crew in compliance with international safety regulations.
The airline also emphasized that it has no significant obligations that would justify the detention of its aircraft by the Nigerian authorities.
It assured that if any obligations were present, they would be logistical and not result in aircraft detention.
African Airlines reiterated its commitment to meeting all its international legal obligations.
Rumours about the plane’s detention surfaced on social media in Libya on Saturday, suggesting that the aircraft was held due to debt issues.
However, the airline’s recent statements have put these claims to rest, reinforcing its adherence to international standards and obligations.
